A short post today, but I envision this topic coming up on a regular basis and I have decided to call it my new favorite old thing, or NFOT for short.

Today it happens to be Stitch and Ditch paper. Now, it may amount to operator error or maybe my machine needs to be serviced (who am I kidding, of course my machine needs to be serviced, but that day is not today)

quilting humor

Or maybe…. I’m just a moron, but I have issues with the first set in any row of chain piecing. I chain piece whenever possible, because, well, let’s be honest… it’s a time saver. Also a thread saver. But mostly a time saver. Anything after that first piece is totally fine, but not that first one. I’ve chewed up more fabric than I care to think about, and to be blunt, who has the money to spend on replacing fabric your machine eats? A hint? Definitely not me, my friends!

bunched thread or thread nests

Thankfully I caught this thread nest before my fabric was destroyed

Ahh, fabric – a topic for another day, but yes I buy the more expensive stuff because I like it better. And because I love my LQS!! You know – I am now typing this and skipping over a whole section because it really is a topic for another day, lol!

batik fabrics on a bolt

Boy, did I digress there. Back to Stitch and Ditch paper – cheap, comes in a huge roll, and could last me years at the rate I use it. I just tear a couple of inches off, put it under the first thing I’m piecing and no more issues!

sewing with stitch and ditch paper

No more thread nests or chewed up fabric!

I don’t have to worry about starting in a half inch and flipping it over to finish the seam (or, in my case, forgetting to do that until I’m ready to move on to the next stage of the block. Oops.) or chewing my spendy fabric. I just tear it off and move on!

So, in all fairness, I am not doing justice to the many uses of Stitch and Ditch paper. It is also used as a stabilizer for machine embroidery, but since that’s not something I’ve decided to jump on board with I will continue to use it to save my sanity whilst piecing! I have also used it to create templates to FMQ  – mostly to keep myself in the general vicinity of where I need to be, but it is amazing for that as well. Yay for the multi tasker!!

There you have it – my NFOT – Stitch and Ditch paper! Pick some up if you haven’t already discovered its value!
